In a 2009 Japanese clinical trial lasting 16 weeks, healthy adult participants with mild cognitive impairment were given 3 grams of the extract. I was interested to read that you recommend taurine, I had not realised that this was natural as you often hear bad things about taurine and thatyou should limit your intake. Do you think it is important to limit your intake?

      There are no documented issues with taking taurine at all.  It has gotten a bad rap after some energy drinks Containing taurine and caffeine were banned in Europe after some deaths attributed to the use of the drinks.  The thought is however that the large amount of caffeine was to blame and certainly not the taurine.

  2. I found this article to be very helpful for me, I even did not know that some of this supplements are nootropical. I am using creatine powder and it work very well ehwn it comes to building muscle mass. I will start using Huperzine A as I see that it is good for memory and it would be good for school exams.

  3. I must say I hadn’t heard of many of these supplements until now! I love learning about the health benefits of supplements.

    I’m particular interesting in the Rhodiola Rosea for brain fog and fatigue, its a bonus that it increases mental performance and concentration! Do you know if it is safe to take with prescribed medicines or is a case of probably best to consult my doctor?

    • There are no known side effects or interactions with other drugs.  That said I’m not a doctor and will say check with yours just to be on the safe side

I think I previously knew Nootropics as being good for cognitive functions, but that was about it as far as my understanding of them went. It’s good to be able to read about them in more depth; you’ve covered a lot of the information that I was missing. I had no idea that Creatine could be used as a Nootropic, that was surprising- I thought it was JUST for bodybuilding. I guess not! Which of these supplements is your personal favorite?

    • my favorite are what I use right now.  Creatine and taurine for my gym routine and ginkgo for cognitive improvements.

    Fascinating article, I have a lot of experience using creatine. As you mention it’s great for helping with muscle mass gains and it also helps increase testosterone production, so it’s one of my favourite supplements. What I didn’t realise is that it can help improve brain processing speeds & intelligence, Taurine is also a supp I’ve previously taken for working out, it looks like I should look at adding it back to my supps drawer. Thanks for sharing this!
