Aniracetam Review

Introduction to my Aniracetam Review

Aniracetam was discovered in the 1970s by Hoffman-LaRoche, a pharmaceutical company in Switzerland.  It is a prescription drug throughout Europe but is easily available here in Canada as wellaniracetam review

as the US and UK as it is not regulated.  Today is my Aniracetam review where I will detail its benefits, side effects if any, stacks with choline and where you can purchase it.

Aniracetam is part of the racetam family of nootropics which is a large group of man-made (synthetic) compounds similar to each other in their chemical structure and how they work.  It like the other Racetams modulates production and release of brain chemicals like neurotransmitters.

This Racetam is quite a potent nootropic with the benefits of being fast-acting and long-lasting.  It has many other benefits such as boosting memory retention, how our brains process information, improving our focus and concentration and all in such a short period of time.

Benefits of Aniracetam

Increased Focus and Concentration

Aniracetam is well known for its ability to boost our mental energy.  It is good for releasing symptoms of anxiety and depression and also one of the top nootropics for creativity.

Aniracetam does this by modulating the AMPA receptors involved in memory and learning.  These AMPA receptors are glutamate receptors which are our body’s most prominent neurotransmitters.  They are important in plasticity and synaptic transmission in our brain.  What that means, in short, is that by improving neurotransmission we get the benefit of better focus, memory, concentration, and learning abilities.

Aniracetam is considered by many to be one of the best nootropics for improving focus and concentration.

Memory and Learning

There is a lot of research suggesting that Aniracetam is a pretty solid memory enhancer.  Indications are it improves our functional memory and there is the possibility it can reverse memory impairment [1].  Mind you this study was done on rats but shows promise.

Brain-derived nerve growth factor (BDNF) is a protein that acts as a “fertilizer” to the synapses.  It protects brain cells, and in certain areas of the brain, regenerates brain cells.  This is one of the main raw ingredients your brain needs for learning and memory.

In one study conducted on human volunteers, aniracetam was found to selectively improve various aspects of memory, including visual recognition, motor performance, and general intellectual functioning [2].

Improvements to Anxiety

Aniracetam is also well known for its anti-anxiety effects.  Social anxiety has been a target of this Racetam as it helps improve mood, focus, and relaxation.

Prescription anti-anxiety are very successful in treating anxiety, but they come at a steep price. The side effects leave you fatigued and tired, with a lack of motivation, drowning in a brain fog.

Aniracetam’s ability to reduce anxiety without causing sedation makes it a standout.  This is achieved by stimulating dopamine and serotonin. Dopamine plays a big part in our motivation, focus, pleasure, and certain types of anxiety. Serotonin is linked with mood, appetite, and sleep.

Users report that Aniracetam has helped them overcome social anxiety, feel more relaxed and focused, supports feelings of well-being.

It was successfully used in Japan to treat anxiety and depression post-stroke.  On that line, studies have shown that Aniracetam improves the emotional state of Alzheimer’s patients.  Its ability to calm, relax, improve mood and focus has made it the second most popular racetam in the racetam family.

Age-Related Cognitive Impairment

While evidence is still lacking, there have been preliminary studies on the effectiveness of Aniracetam on age-related cognitive impairment.

One trial  showed that aniracetam a safe and effective treatment for mild to severe dementia, enhancing mood and improving function for at least 12 months [3]

In 2012 there was a study in CNS Neuroscience & Therapeutics that said treating elderly adults with age-related cognitive impairment did help with mood and emotional well-being.  The study involved 276 people who were given aniracetam for one year.  I looked for the study but was not able to find it.

Depression

Aniracetam has been proven to fight depression [4]. Aniracetam’s effect on mood is very pronounced, although there is minimal research on its cognitive benefits. However, Aniracetam may be good

for those suffering from depression.

Aniracetam’s stimulation of Dopamine and Serotonin may raise the availability of these two important neurotransmitters that are both linked to mood associated with positivity, pleasure, motivation, relaxation, and happiness.

Anecdotally it is described as promoting a sense of well being, relieving symptoms of stress, depression and enhancing motivation.

Clinical trials have shown aniracetam to be a safe and effective treatment for mild to severe dementia, enhancing mood and improving function for at least 12 months.‍[10]

In one of the few human studies on aniracetam, a total of 276 cognitive disorder patients with a mean age of 71 years were divided into four groups to test the effectiveness of aniracetam as a dementia treatment, alone or in combination with other drugs. Over a period of 12 months, patients treated with aniracetam demonstrated significantly better cognitive performance, improved function, and enhanced mood and emotional stability.

Improves Symptoms of Dementia

There has been a double-blind randomized controlled trial conducted on 109 people suffering from mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease.  They were given aniracetam and showed a significant improvement in their attention, verbal and visuospatial memory, and their logical perceptual ability as compared to those receiving the placebo [5].

Side Effects of Aniracetam

Aniracetam is considered to be a well-tolerated nootropic to take.  Side effects are generally mild if any at all.  Usually, if you experience side effects they will be some anxiety, insomnia, headache, and diarrhea [6].  These are usually attributed to starting the nootropic for the first time or taking a higher dose than is recommended.

The headache is the most reported side effect and has another reason associated with it.  You may have a choline deficiency.  In this case, it is highly recommended to combine aniracetam with a choline source like CDP-Choline or Alpha-GPC.

As always, I strongly recommend that if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or nursing, please refrain from taking this nootropic.

Children should never be given Aniracetam.  There is no long term research done on the growing brain and aniracetam.

Aniracetam Dosage

The average typical daily dosage range of Aniracetam is between 500mg-1500mg or less if using it in combination with other Nootropics.

Aniracetam is fat-soluble, meaning it should be taken with some type of fat for better absorption.

Stacking

In the side effects, I mentioned headache due possibly from a choline deficiency.  Choline is always recommended to be taken alongside all racetams.

Aniracetam requires a good availability of choline because it stimulates the cholergenic system.  Supplementing with a good source of choline will make sure your body has enough to allow aniracetam to have the optimal effect and preventing the chance of a headache.

Where to Buy

Aniracetam is not available on Amazon due to certain regulations but can be purchased online.

I recommend you order aniracetam from PureNootropics.net or Nootropics Depot.

Closing Thoughts

Aniracetam has a great reputation and continues to be a favourite cognitive enhancer.  It is powerful and fast acting taking care of improving our memory, reducing anxiety and diminishing symptoms of depression.

Racetams in general and that includes Aniracetam should always be accompanied by a choline source which can never be a bad thing.

I certainly would recommend Aniracetam to anyone.

  1. How long have you been using Aniracetam? I’ve used it for quite some time, but stopped using it. I really like the verbal fluency I got on it, but it also made me feel just a little off.
Probably the main reason I quit using it is because it seems to mess with my sleep quality, but the biggest reason for quitting was that I would become quite irritable when it wore off. Did you experience any of this?

I’ve also switched to Coluracetam and later NSI-189 for a while, both seem to have fever side effects for me.
Did you ever compare those to Aniracetam?

    • Daniel I’ve not used Aniracetam at all so can’t really answer your questions.

Some people do feel ‘off’ and are having trouble getting a decent sleep with it. That is probably just because they are sensitive to it.

      Cheers
