Onnit Alpha Brain ReviewIntroduction to my Onnit Alpha Brain Review

Onnit has a habit of coming up with some pretty high-quality supplements and today is my Onnit Alpha Brain review. Onnit is known for using only natural earth grown nutrients including this blend, their best nootropic yet and there have been 2 clinical trials on humans that showed ‘statistical significance on multiple areas of cognition’.

Alpha Brain is a fully balanced Nootropic or a “brain vitamin.” This formula focuses on increasing a neurotransmitter in the brain, Acetylcholine. This neurotransmitter is directly responsible for focus, mental acuity, drive, memory function, clearing mental fog, and even plays a role in REM sleep regulation. Alpha Brain increases your maximum mental functioning, while also keeping you honed and intently focused. Alpha Bain comes in 3 different blends. Flow, Focus, and fuel.

You can even take Alpha brain to enhance your lucid dreams Because of it being an Acetylcholine booster.

Ingredients

Alpha Brain comes in vegetable capsules, with 30 two-capsule servings per bottle

Onnit Flow Blend

L-Tyrosine

L-Tyrosine is one of the naturally-occurring amino acids and is essential to our physical and mental function. It is also the precursor for three of the most important neurotransmitters dopamine, adrenaline, and norepinephrine.

Dopamine is all about reward and pleasure and has an important role in our mood, motivation, and cognition.  Adrenaline and norepinephrine are the hormones associated with our fight or flight response to stress.

L-Tyrosine is also necessary to the production of both thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism, and melanin, a natural pigment occurring in our hair, skin, and eyes.

L-Theanine

L- theanine is a neurologically active organic compound present almost solely in the green tea plant.

L-theanine has been shown to significantly increase alpha waves and promote relaxation without drowsiness or sedation, making it an ideal mental state for, well, most things.

Our Alpha brain-wave production also happens during deep meditation, when all sensory inputs are limited and our mind is clear of unwanted thoughts and any distractions. Interestingly, stimulating alpha waves has also been shown to boost creativity and alleviate depression.

L-theanine health benefits are many and you can read my complete guide here.

Oat Straw Extract (Avena Sativa)

Oat Straw helps to calm, soothe, and nourish our nervous system. Its ability to reduce anxiety and stress levels has been anecdotally confirmed by many current users. Oat straw also contains a powerful vitamin B complex to boost sustained energy. At night, it also promotes restful sleep and an overall sense of well-being.

Phosphatidylserine

Phosphatidylserine is part of a category of fat-soluble substances called that are called phospholipids. Phospholipids are necessary components of cell membranes.

Phosphatidylserine is found in high concentrations in the brain and it is part of the cell structure and is key in the maintenance of cellular function. It can boost our short term memory and mood, improve our concentration level, enhance our learning and ability to retain information, and nourish our brain cells.

AC-11 (Uncaria tomentosa Extract) – 350mg

AC-11 is a proprietary Cat’s Claw Extract and is the only known plant extract in the world shown by research studies to enhance the cellular DNA repair process, among other cellular benefits, such as inflammation suppression and apoptosis inducement.

Onnit Focus Blend

L-Alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine (Alpha GPC)

Choline is a dietary supplement that’s found in many forms such as choline bitartrate and CDP-choline and, while the former tends to be seen as a health molecule, the latter and alpha-GPC are both designed with cognitive benefits in mind.

The Benefits of Alpha GPC:

  • Improves immediate recall, reaction time, and mood
  • Improved attention
  • Protects brain cells and membranes
  • Supports optimal brain function
  • Decreases symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease brain injuries, stroke, vascular dementia, and Parkinson’s disease.
  • Helps the body create more Acetylcholine, which makes learning and retaining new information easier.
  • Help your muscles work better during exercise allowing an easier gain in muscle strength.
  • It helps your body produce more growth hormone so that your bones and muscles grow strong and remain healthy.

When in the brain, these two choline delivery agents are thought to help the body produce more of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is a major player in learning and memory.

Bacopa Monnieri Extract

A herb used in Ayurveda as an antidepressant, and a cognitive booster. While performing stressful cognitive tests, those taking Bacopa Monnieri experienced the herb’s nootropic effects and reduced stress and cortisol levels.  Bacopa might increase certain brain chemicals that are involved in thinking, learning, and memory. Some research suggests that it might also protect brain cells from chemicals involved in Alzheimer’s disease.

Huperzia Serrata Extract

This plant extract is an Acetylcholinesterase (AchE)inhibitor. AchE breaks down the Acetylcholine, and Huperzia Serrata restrains the process, allowing more Acetylcholine to be available for the brain’s neurons.  It shows incredible efficacy for improving memory and recall for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia, but also demonstrates powerful neuroprotective and neuroregenerative properties for everyday use in healthy individuals.

Fuel Blend

L-Leucine

Leucine is an essential branched-chain amino acid involved in protein synthesis and a number of other metabolic functions. We’ve seen it in many energy stacks before to great effect.

Leucine increases energy and protein, therefore muscle production and is very popular as a bodybuilding supplement.

Vinpocetine

Vinpocetine is a unique compound that can enhance our memory, our mood, and our cognition. It works by improving cerebral blood flow and circulation, increasing the absorption of oxygen and nutrients, modulating the levels of important neurotransmitters, and also acts as a neuroprotective antioxidant.

Pterostilbene

An antioxidant found in blueberries and grapes, this compound has known antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticarcinogenic properties. Recently, studies have indicated a link between pterostilbene and improved brain health.

Tips

  1. Have it with your morning coffee to get a quick burst of energy or try it in the afternoon when your day seems to never end.
  2. Take it just before a meal to take advantage of your digestive system working full on and to be certain you get the advantage of full absorption.
  3. For lucid dreaming, start with one or two capsules in the afternoon and work your way up to three.

Alpha Brain is an effective caffeine-free and BSCG Certified nootropic stacked with a number of effective earth-grown ingredients. This BSCG certification signifies that Alpha Brain is drug-free and composed only of naturally grown ingredients, making it somewhat unique in the nootropic space. We were initially skeptical about its effectiveness is given such a clean pedigree, but all four of our testers experienced noticeable cognitive boosts.

In addition to a cognitive boost, some users feel increased focus and stamina. When taken in the afternoon, Alpha Brain can induce vivid, lucid dreams at night. Though its perceived effects seem to diminish over time, taking a break from the supplement for a few days seems to be enough time for its effectiveness to return.

Conclusion

Is Onnit Alpha Brain Safe?

Some anecdotal reports show headaches and jaw pain, which is probably related to the high amounts of acetylcholine.

Some report having uncomfortably vivid dreams.

Most of the ingredients of Alpha Brain are generally regarded as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Does it Work?

Within the Boston University study, scientists found that Alpha Brain was 12% more effective than a placebo for verbal recall (memory). Mental processing speed also increased by 21% compared to baseline.

  1. I wonder if people take this supplement just for the lucid dreaming? lol I know I might take it just to enhance my dreams a bit.  This sounds like a very interesting supplement.  I like that it’s all natural and it appears to really help people stay alert and have more energy.  Does taking these with caffeine stimulants enhance the drug at all?  I don’t really drink caffeine all that much so I’m wondering how it would affect me if I did take it with caffeine?

    • Yes Caffeine will increase the affect of Alpha Brain and it is actually suggested to combine a coffee with Alpha Brain.  I haven’t had caffeine in years so I won’t go down that route.

  2. Hi this is very interesting. I can see how many would benefit from taking this supplement and you demonstrate that by that increase in brain functions at the bottom of the page. However I have to say the potential side effects worry me a little. Do the headaches or jaw pain subside after a while or should you just stop taking the supplement altogether. Thanks, Kenny

    • Usually with side affects from supplements you can lower the amount you take or just stop and try another brand in the same group.

  3. This is a fascinating review of a product that I had not previously heard of.

It sounds as though it is extremely effective, and that it is a product that very many people could benefit from.

I wondered if you have any idea whether it would benefit someone who has MS, and experiences the brain fogging and fatigue which comes with that condition? And would you think that it would be safe for such a person to take?

I will certainly be considering using the product.

Very many thanks for this information

    Chrissie 🙂

    • I do think it would be safe for an MS patient to take and may help, but first I would definitely talk to your physician first because I have no idea of what complications there may be with MS

  4. The product review on Onnit Alpha Brain brings in a super BSGC certified safe product with FDA approved ingredients. It is good product from Onnit which already is an established and trusted name in Vitamin supplement market.

The components used in the product has been explicitly described with their individual merit supporting the product for brain function, memory and cognitive enhancement, memory recall and processing.

With all these safe and high quality benign ingredient composite to create this formula, the side effects seem to suggest there are ingredient interaction or interaction supplement with brain functions! Although they fade away with time. There are numerous good testimonials out there to support this supplement.

It remains to be seen if there are any long term effects because the product is not that old in market. The three available forms are similar in action, how to choose one vs, the other and then comparing with a high performer like Qualia in nootropic market will add to the review in my opinion.

I have no personal experience with the product but seems an attractive product to try and see. Thank you for sharing this beneficial product.

  5. Wow. This is crazy! I’ve never heard of this befor was. You would think that doctors would suggest this supplement instead of prescribing a prescription. I know most doctors are stuck in their ways but this makes it seem as if the times are changing. I would like to take this to help my memory. Do you know if it helps long term or short term or both?

    • If you take it for a short time using the short term suggested dose you will get short term results.  Taking it long term will give you some pretty good results

  6. In order to do my job properly, I need to be highly focused and having always my brain function at its highest. Supplements like this help me take the best from my memory and brain. Never used Onnit products before, but I like the fact that they are made of only natural earth grown nutrients; it makes them some kind of ‘organic’ supplements. Should Alpha Brain be taken daily? Is there any suggestion how many days in consecutive should be taken?

    • There are various strengths of Alpha Brain and each strength suggests 2 capsules daily.  Take for short term boost or take continuously for long term brain support

  7. Thank you for an interesting product review. As I never took any brain boost supplements, I have some questions:

How many capsules should be taken per day and for how long? If it’s taken with a meal, are the benefits of the product diminished? Are the side effects present to all the persons or only to a specific group of people?

    • take them with a meal.  2 a day no matter what the potency you choose.

As far as side effects it largely depends on the potency.

  8. Hi Stew,

I have tried a few Nootropics before and had some side affects. What I find better about this product is that you offer different products. That is wonderful, because I can choose a product with less ingredients and get the brain boost without the stuff that bothers me. For example, your Flow Blend lists 5 ingredients which I don’t get side affects, (if those are the only ingredients). But, the Focus Blend has several ingredients which I can’t take, for instance the  Bacopa Monnieri Extract just makes me too sleepy. Can you tell me if the 5 ingredients listed for the Flow Blend are the only ingredients? Maybe you should display both labels so we can see for ourselves exactly what the differences are between the two products. Thanks again for the informative website!

    Chas

    • Yes, those are the only things on the ingredient list provided on the back of the bottle.

Yes, It is a good idea to display the back of the bottle and I will do that from now on.  Great idea.
