From time to time we all would like a stress reducer so we can get some needed sleep. Life is fast-paced. We have jobs that get more and more demanding. We have commutes that can rip the patience right out of us. When we get home it’s the kids and getting them to their sports or other activities. It never stops and it never will. How do we deal with it? New Mood, that ‘s it. This is my Onnit New Mood Review!
Many people see their doctor for anti-anxiety and or antidepressant meds and then medicine cabinets fill up and we feel flat or just slow and ‘off’ when on them. Don’t we want to feel better so we can maintain our lifestyle? The active lifestyle that keeps us healthy? Yes, but it becomes harder and harder.
Sleep aids take up a lot of premium space in pharmacies because a lot of money is to be made by pharma on them. They fly off the shelves because we need sleep any way we can get it to be at our best during our stressful day.
Onnit Labs, the makers of Alpha Brain jumped on our need to get us balanced again. They decided to address all of the issues I mentioned above with their product New Mood. In my New Mood review, I will look more into what is in the bottle and what are the benefits of what is in the bottle, how to take New Mood, side effects if any.
Ingredients of New Mood
Tryptophan is the only precursor of Serotonin period. We need this nutrient because it is a very important component in the synthesis of the neurotransmitter Serotonin.
Serotonin is commonly referred to as the “happiness molecule”. Having low levels of serotonin often can result in pain, insomnia, depression, seasonal affective disorder, and chronic fatigue.
If your body is going to produce Serotonin which it needs, it must have a good supply of the amino acid Tryptophan. It is used now for ADHD, insomnia, anxiety, pain, depression and eating disorders.
When you try L-Tryptophan for the first time and take it in the evening you will feel great the next day. You will feel more full of energy, your anxiety will diminish and you will feel happier and have more self-esteem with more energy and less anxiety.
5-Hydroxytryptophan, or 5-HTP for short, is a naturally-occurring amino acid metabolite known mostly for its role in the production of Serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a huge role in regulating our moods and our social behaviours. When we have a healthy supply of serotonin in our brain we can be happy and have a feeling of well-being. A lack of Serotonin is believed to play a role in depression or other emotional problems.
Healthy brain serotonin levels are associated with happiness and well-being, and its deficiency is believed to play a part in the development of depression and other emotional issues.
5-HTP has been shown to decline in our brain as we grow older, which may be tied to lower serotonin levels in ageing brains.
Research shows us that 5-HTP may help shorten the time it takes to fall asleep and increase sleep amounts.
The anti-anxiety and relaxation benefits of 5-HTP may come from its ability to increase the levels of Serotonin in our brain. Research shows that it can reduce the risks of having panic attacks or lower the symptoms of panic. It can also lower the risks of emotional stress.
Magnesium is well known for promoting relaxation even taking it alone. It has the ability to support heart health and a healthy nervous system. It also helps in blood pressure balance.
An ingredient that is great for relaxation all on its own. Magnesium supports a healthy heart and nervous system, aids in blood pressure control and provides a muscular and physical calming.
Otherwise called Niacin, Vitamin B-3 has a great benefit of being able to open up our bodies blood vessels and smaller capillaries, allowing for a natural restorative power to cleanse and detoxify your system.
Vitamin B-6 is important in assisting with the production of serotonin. This B vitamin actually helps the body produce amino acids and neurotransmitters.
It was also used in England during World War II to relieve the stress and anxiety caused by air raids (6).
Valerian Root interacts with GABA. GABA is a messenger that helps regulate the nerve impulses in your brains and our nervous system.
Valerenic acid has been shown to prevent the breakdown of GABA in the brain. The result is feelings of calmness and tranquillity.
Valerian root also contains the antioxidants Hesperidin and Linarin, which appear to have sedative and sleep-enhancing properties. (10)
Chamomile Flower Extract
Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) is a very well-known medicinal plant. There are two common species called German and Roman Chamomile.
the Chamomile extract contains an antioxidant called Apigenin. Apigenin is found a lot in the very popular Chamomile tea. What it does is bind to receptors in our brain that decrease anxiety and help us sleep.
A study done using 60 nursing home residents showed us that those participants who were given 400mg/day of chamomile extract had a significant improvement in their sleep quality than those who didn’t.
We have very encouraging results from these studies for those who have difficulty getting to sleep and having a good sleep. Further studies are necessary for complete confirmation.
Lemon Balm Leaf Extract
Lemon Balm Extract can be used in the treatment of anxiety, specifically to reduce anxiety levels. There was a small study that was published in ‘Nutrients‘. Volunteers were given either a drink or yogurt that contained 0.3g of Lemon Balm extract. Others were given a placebo. Those that had the drink or the yogurt with fruit sweetener experienced lower anxiety, better working memory with no impairment to psychomotor performance.
Previous studies suggest that a compound in lemon balm called rosmarinic acid may have some anti-anxiety effects by increasing the availability of GABA in the brain.
Not only does Lemon Balm Extract have anti-anxiety properties, but it also has sleep benefits when combined with Valerian Root (Read about it above).
There was a study done to test the combination of Lemon Balm extract and Valerian Rood and what it can do to improve our sleep during menopause. 100 women between the ages of 50 and 60 who reported sleep disorders were given a combination of the two or a placebo. What was found was that those taking the combination had a significant effect reducing their sleep disorders.
Jujube Seed Extract
These are often used and well known in Chinese medicine as a sleep aid to treat insomnia. Taking a look at Jujube Seed Extract it was found that they contain compounds called flavonoids, saponins, and polysaccharides. There have been studies on these that show that it is the high content of saponin that makes it a great natural sedative that has a soothing effect on our entire nervous system
There was a study in China that found saponin that was in Jujubes showed that is was an effective sedative and had hypnotic effects used to promote sleep.
The Dose of New Mood
The suggested starting dose of New Mood is 2 capsules at a time and after some time if you notice that the effect is weaker you can increase the amount to a maximum of 4 capsules per day.
Take two capsules during the evening before you go to bed so that you can get the sleep benefits as well. When increasing the dosage, you can take an additional two capsules around noon to get additional stress support.
